Drowning in Immersion

چکیده
It is commonly believed, but not proven, that virtual reality attains its power by captivating the user's attention to induce a sense of immersion [1] and presence [2]. This is what sets virtual reality apart from other interface metaphors. However, both these terms have been liberally used to varying degrees within the virtual reality literature. This paper attempts to step back from the technological issues of immersion and to look at some of the basics of immersion itself. Looking at examples of immersion in reality can help us to understanding what may or may not be required in a proposed virtual reality (VR) system. Using the physical senses as a basis for defining immersion has been discussed and three examples (reality, VR and dreaming while asleep) have been highlighted to show the interplay of external sensory stimulation and internal sense representation.

Secondary drowning in children.
Secondary drowning (and near-drowning) is one of the post-immersion respiratory syndromes. It is defined as deterioration of pulmonary function that follows deficient gas exchange due to loss or inactivation of surfactant. A review of 94 consecutive cases of near-drowning in childhood showed that this syndrome occurred in five (5%) cases. Its onset was usually rapid and characterised by a laten...
متن کاملReduced cerebral perfusion on sudden immersion in ice water: a possible cause of drowning.
INTRODUCTION Near-drowning incidents and drowning deaths after accidental immersion in open waters have been linked to cold shock response. It consists of inspiratory gasps, hyperventilation, tachycardia, and hypertension in the first 2-3 min of cold-water immersion. This study explored the immediate changes in cerebral blood flow velocity (Vmean) during cold-water immersion since cold shock in...
متن کاملPhysiology Of Drowning: A Review.
Drowning physiology relates to two different events: immersion (upper airway above water) and submersion (upper airway under water). Immersion involves integrated cardiorespiratory responses to skin and deep body temperature, including cold shock, physical incapacitation, and hypovolemia, as precursors of collapse and submersion. The physiology of submersion includes fear of drowning, diving re...
متن کاملAcute renal impairment after immersion and near-drowning.
Acute renal impairment (ARI) secondary to immersion and near-drowning is rarely described and poorly understood. A retrospective case-control study was performed: (1) to determine the incidence of ARI associated with near-drowning or immersion and (2) to define the clinical syndrome and to assess clinical predictors of ARI. Of 30 patients presenting after immersion or near-drowning, 50% were id...
متن کاملReducing drowning deaths: the continued challenge of immersion fatalities in Australia.
OBJECTIVE To explore 5 years of drowning deaths in Australia compared with a previous Australian study a decade earlier, and to assess the feasibility of achieving a 50% reduction in unintentional drowning deaths by 2020. DESIGN AND SETTING An audit of all unintentional drowning deaths in Australia using data from the National Coroners Information System for 1 July 2002 to 30 June 2007. MAI...
متن کاملDrowning risks to epileptic children: a study from Hawaii.
The role of epileptiform seizures in causing drowning and near-drowning among children was studied by examining the case reports of all 140 childhood immersion accidents that occurred in an area of Hawaii over five years. Four of the 140 immersion accidents were caused partly by epileptiform seizures, but none were fatal. The combined results of the Hawaiian and Brisbane studies (total populati...
